Pomona recognizes church as city’s first Black historic landmark (August 2021)
Mount Zion Church, at 841 S. Main St., was built in 1923, a time when only eight Black families lived in Pomona, according to Census data. It was built by those families and operated as a house of worship and a place of gathering for the Black community.

Swodeck has served the city as a volunteer for the past 20 years. “That’s what I’ve been about – it’s been about advocacy, it’s been about finding everyone’s voice, and not just going there to hear and talk to people but really listen,” she said. “That is my absolute when it comes to making sure that our community is thriving.”

After the Nogales event, the exhibit traveled to Pomona and opened at the African American Museum of Beginnings during the Juneteenth holiday weekend. Juneteenth is a national holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
